For the Love of Mimi…Really?

Our fur babies really get under our skin and strike our heart strings but sometimes I wonder if they do things just to annoy us. We all know how smart they are and that they think they are the boss…sometimes they are.

IMG_20181127_100749
How appropriate sometimes

I saw this on Face Book and thought it was very true at times. It can be annoying…or am I the only one with this problem. Let’s do today’s example.

Due to training as a puppy and other situations at the time we had a water bowl located in 2 areas – there was three but enough already. One with her food station, by the kitchen and one in the bathroom. I tried to eliminate the one in the bathroom but gave up due to all the back talk I got.

IMG_20181101_153502
I have never had a verbally complaining dog before this one.

She will sit there “back talking” until she is satisfied that I have done what she wants done. I am really not that much of a pushover, she is that demanding. Yes, she is spoiled and likes the fact that  I am retired now and can be at every whim of her desire. Today, her water bowl in the bath was  very low – not empty- but lower than she wanted so she brought it to the living room to show me it was low, spilling the remainder of the contents as she placed it in my view.

IMG_20181127_104959
Not where it goes

This is her ice chest to keep her off of the window where the sill needs repainting. Since my current ability to get around is hindered for a few more weeks, I was not fast enough for her. Oh, and she had to walk by her feeding station to get the now empty bowl to the window and that bowl has plenty of water in it.

IMG_20181127_105443
Not the bowl she wanted to drink from.

So we made sure all bowls were full and in their correct places. Mimi. She can be a butt sometimes but I do still love her. Anybody else got a dog that controls the house?

In closing remember to be kind, it still amazes me how animals fully understand inter-specie kindness and love. Kindness is a gift from God to all of creation.

Memories of Past Loves, TPC

Today’s challenge from Dutch Goes the Photo concerns memories and is sparked by his memory when losing a beloved canine member named Bette, last week. Our canine companions really do become family as they become part of our hearts. So this post is in dedication to all the loved canines I have had over the years. I actually have written a book about them but now that it is complete I have no clue what to do next.

The pictures I will post are taken from old photos that were in scrapbooks or photo albums from ???years ago when I was young.  But as I review these wonderful photos, I remember their individual personalities.  And I remember how all the kids in the neighborhood loved them and wherever the kids were, the dogs were too.

My first dog I remember was Spot Tillman Jr III as named by my older brother who was probably 4 at the time. There was no I, II or even junior for Spot, so I am not sure why the additives but there you have it. Spot was mostly white with brown ears, a German Short Hair that was scared of hunting. But allowed being sat on – yes that’s me.

IMG_20180924_111727

Then there was Nellie a small terrier who had puppies and we kept one that looked like her and her name was Sandra. Then in junior high I got Gypsy, a mixed breed with pronounced black skin around her eyes and mouth. She was part of the neighborhood canine group of kids and dogs together as one. With her is Blacky, another member of the neighborhood group.

IMG_20180924_111928

Samantha, which my mother thought was her dog came when I was in High school and college. But in reality we all really know whose dog it was.

After college and leaving home, my first dog was Zero. So named due to his over tiny ears and tail when he was a puppy. They later grew into very nice ears and tail.

Of all the dogs I have had, Baby Ruth was my favorite. She was a Black Lab cross that was connected to my very soul. She is the matriarch hero of my book.

A breed of dog I wish I had discovered earlier in life is the Great Dane. Wonder gentle giants, clownish and protective at the same time. Dittims was a Harlequin Great Dane meaning he was the white with black spots. His back hit just above my waist and he topped out at about 185. I use him in my blog heading. He had his own chair.  The funniest thing though, and evidently a lot of danes do it, they think they are lap dogs and they will literally come sit in your lap – feet on the floor with their butt in your lap. It is too funny.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Spot Junior the 4th aka Dittims. He had one spot on one side in the shape of a heart.

My canine besty now is Mimi. Her full name is Screaming Mimi as when she was a tiny, she would scream when left like what my images of what a screaming mimi sounded like. Ear piercing. Even now that she is grown, the pitch of her bark can make you put your hands over your ears.

While she sounds ferocious you can tell from the last picture she really is just goofy. But she is a great companion.

I hope you enjoyed my canine memory lane and I look forward to read other memories as well from this fpj-photo-challenge.

And since we are in canine mode, I remind everyone the value of kindness. No matter how small a kindness you may share with human or animal, it is never wasted.

Fun with Hymns

Did you know that hymns were written for specific occupations or needs? Or that hymns were written to help you get into heaven…quickly?  I saw this list and it made me laugh as I hope it will bring a chuckle to you as well. We can’t be serious all the time and if we look at things from a different point of view, we can sometime see a smile across God’s face. He loves us, wants us to follow and love him and he wants us happy. After All he did create laughter.  Enjoy! And I bet you can come up with others yourself.

And always remember to be kind. It will bring a smile as well.

Three New Fun Ornaments, TPC

Tuesday’s Photo Challenge made me giggle as I just bought a trio of new ornaments for my “Fun Tree”. This tree has the quirky ornaments, the ornaments my children made over the year and then back filled with colored balls to reflects the light and love of the tree. This tree is located in my bedroom in a large bump out window. Perfect place for a tree.

IMG_20181113_095417
Mermaid S’More at the top, Angel S’More in the Center and S’More with Reindeer

The S’More collection started when my kids were in high school and pranksters. My oldest gave me the first one and that started a trend where now I try to find a new one each year. This year I found 3 that I didn’t have that I liked. I think I now have over 30 of them and the fun tree is quickly becoming the S’More tree.

When we were told we could be humorous for today’s challenge, I could not resist. And remember humor like art is in the eye of the beholder.

And I close as I always do in reminding myself and others to always be kind. Today is World Kindness Day, so an extra reminder to be kind.

Fun and Memories

Tomorrow is the big day and while I can still do nicknacks inside, the outside must be complete as I will not be able to traverse the front stoop. My style for Christmas decor is a mix between quirky cute and semi formal nice. So outside will be mostly fun. I wrapped concrete blocks in cute Christmas cloth added bows and solar lights and hope they can withstand the coming snow.

IMG_20181108_140824
Frosty, Bing and Dasher

I have been waiting 2 years for this “fast growing” evergreen to get big enough to decorate. Its still small but I don’t care, it is now covered in solar lights. They are small enough where their weight should not hurt the limbs. Frosty is a bird feeder and filled with sunflower seeds. Bing is a penguin and of course everyone knows who Dasher is. His nose is not red so he can not be Rudolph. Both of these critters are solar lights that light up in the evening. Christmas should always be fun, something to help you create wonderful memories and enjoy the season. That may be why I do so much Christmas. If you  missed my post yesterday and want to see the first posted tree, that is the most formal tree and is all white. It is located in the dining room and beneath it is my village. Check it out here if you wish. The tree that is in my bedroom is my fun tree.

Other things on this fun tree are other ornaments my children made over the years, fun ornament gifts from friends and quirky things I have found over the years. I am a big fan of the S’More ornaments. If you are not familiar as to what a S’more is, its a campfire treat with graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows – way too sweet for me but I love the funny ornaments. I will post a few today and  post some throughout the season. Do I have enough to last all season long, maybe not but I did find another bag today of ornaments I bought at the end of the season last year. So at least you can join in on my fun memory time.

The Grand Questions of What and Where

It is getting to be that time of year where we decorate the house to show our fun side or serious side of decorating. Some are very modern, some very traditional and then there is me with what strikes my fancy at the given moment. I don’t really have themed trees but I they are on the specific side. My biggest tree 7.5′ is in the living room and that one generally has the more traditional of nicer type ornaments; the 4.5′ tree on top of my dining room table is decorated all white tree with the village beneath; then there is the fun 6.5′ tree in my bedroom at the bump out window. I am on schedule to be complete by Wednesday and will share my fun when complete but for now I though I would share Santa and Chris Moose as they discuss the best placement ideas for the lights on the tree in the bedroom. Its can be a big discussion…

Christmas is a serious as well as a fun and wonderful time for all of us who are still kids at heart. I wish each of you the very best holiday months as you spend time with family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Make sure you hug them all and let them know how very special they are to you.

And as always, I close with a reminder to us all, including my self, Be kind. Sometimes during the hustle and bustle of the holidays we forget and become rushed and self absorbed. If you are too busy to really speak. them remember to smile – a smile can turn a frown upside down.

The Yard is Done, #1Liner Wednesday

Fall brings about a flurry of cleaning projects to get ready for winter and I am on a time schedule. So the last 2 days I have not touched my computer much other than to read some of your wonderful stories. But alas, it is all done….outside. Thanks to Alternative Design Landscapes Specialist out of Bettendorf Iowa I have new steps and a new wall that were rotting railroad timbers and a new mailbox to keep the mailman happy and Mimi less stressed.

And while that was going on, the plumber came out to fix a leaky outside faucet before it got cold and I got all the flower bed cleaning done. All in all a busy but productive two days. Now I can sit on the sofa and play on the computer while watching the birds eat and fight over the new bird feeders. They are so fun to watch. The feeder is close to the evergreens where they zoom to hid when spooked only to peek out to make sure all is clear before heading back to the feeders.

Mostly what I have are chickadees but this big fella enjoys the sunflower seeds as well.

Dirty windows too…work never ends

I clean the windows about every two weeks as Mimi loves looking out as well and leaves her nose and slobber marks. And of course we have to warn about the dreaded mailman. The ice box was added as an incentive to save the window seal.

Time is Getting Short. Get ready! #6WS

Time is getting short, I only have 2 weeks left to get ready for Christmas. What? Its not even Halloween yet. True. But I have to have the yard fully ready for winter, the front door cleaned and painted from Mimi’s scratching this summer(it’s how she knocks), get the house fully cleaned inside and everything in its place so that I can decorate for Christmas and be completely ready by end of day November 8th.   November the 9th is RF day. RF day is surgery on the right foot, like the surgery in August on the left foot which means no walking at all for 3 weeks and very limited walking after that for another month. I am not missing out on Christmas so we decorate early. I have no problem with that.

Accomplished so far is the yard is clean. Landscape people are coming on Tuesday to rebuild the back steps and to replace the rotting railroad timbers with large boulders. I have also finished painting the front door. It looks better gray than white and maybe it will hide Mimi’s “knocking” better.

IMG_20181026_150538

But I still have the 7′ tree for the living room, the 7′ tree for the front bedroom, the 4′ tree and village(20+ pieces) for the dining room table, the two foot tree for the kitchen and master bath and then there are the 5 different nativity sets that need to go up, one set having candles along with countless “stuff” that sits everywhere. Yes, I have a fanatic love for Christmas, what it means and decorating for it. Oh, and I forgot the 4′ stuffed Santa that I won when  I was 12. Here is a picture of him last year trying to hang lights on the tree. He is so clumsy and gets tangled every year in lights. But he loves to look at the tree.

Silly Santa

Debbie Smyth’s Six Word Saturday reminded me just how short a time I have left to get it all done.  But when it all gets done I will post pictures….lots and lots of pictures. Oh and I didn’t mention downstairs. My daughter lives down stairs and she is just as bad as I am. We set aside one day a year, the off day for Ga. football, to do ornament shopping. We like to buy 1 new and interesting ornament every year….1…what am I saying? But its our fun tradition each year and we have a blast.

And in closing, I remind myself and others, it’s beginning to be that joyful time of year. We need to make it last longer than just this time of year.  Spread joy and kindness wherever you go.

Colloquialism, A $5 word – #SoCS

Colloquialism is described in Webster’s as a word or phrase that is not formal or literary and is typically used in ordinary or familiar conversations.  That even sounds complicated.

dictionary

I am from the south, the true south of the United States of America. And by true south, as explained only by someone from the true south, that means east of the Mississippi River and below the Mason-Dixon Line. While some people feel that part of the country can  be more gentile, they can also be more scrappy than most.

As I have lived in other parts of the country, my southernisms have been known to turn a head or two. Most people just look at you like a deer in headlights. All southernisms are local terms or phrases we use in the south that we all understand what they mean. Proper name for them is colloquialism, a $5 word. A $5 word is big word, a hard to pronounce word, a dictionary looking up word or a very proper word nobody really uses. One of the most famous southernism  we get teased about is a phrase we use that means we are getting ready to do something. That phrase is “fixin to”  ex. I am fixin to get dressed.  I am fixin to cook up a mess of beans. That means I am going to cook a large pot of beans. There is even a certified dictionary for southernisms but I have read some of those and some of those are ridiculousness that somebody just made of to make us look even more silly.

It’s the way we speak y’all
south1
The word sugar ends with an “h” in  the south.

Linda G Hill with Streams of Consciousness gave us the prompt for this week of “bone”.  My first thought was fighting words  – huh? When someone ticked you off but yet they were not present, the next time you saw them you would yell across the room “Hey, I gotta bone to pick with you“. Then they knew they were in trouble with a capital T. That phrase may be used lots of places but I know the south does use it frequently. In doing research on the phrase, they linked it to bone of contention going back as far as the 1500 with the idea of two dogs fighting over the same tasty bone.

I gave Mimi and knuckle bone I got from a local butcher and she turned her nose up at it. Guess she is too sophisticated for the real thing and prefers her “chicken bone”.

IMG_20181026_232540
Chicken Flavor? Really?

Who am I to judge? She is happy, I am happy. Its all good.

And in closing, I remind myself and others to always be kind. You never know when that stranger may be an angel in disguise.

Walmart – Word Prompt Humor

You know it is a sad thing when a website is dedicated to the way people dress while shopping in their store and that store is Walmart.  I shop at Walmart and I don’t dress crazy or am disrespectful to other people eyes. If I don’t want to see it, surly I don’t want you to either. But that is not what this is about.

A weekly prompt from qc of  http://weeklyprompts.com/2018/10/24/word-prompt-humor asked to share a funny story where someone pushed you to that point but you refrained because you knew it would have been bad if you reacted to the situation – you just smile and go on.

breaking point

This goes along with the saying that God doesn’t give you situations you cant handle, you made need His help but you still can stand.

Those of you who have been following me for a bit (only been around for 4 months) know that I just recently had foot surgery. A couple of weeks ago I just needed to get out from being cooped up for 7 weeks so I went with my daughter to Walmart for the weekly grocery shopping. I got one of the electric buggies as there was no way I could manage the distance of the floor space of that store.

When going down the spice aisle, I got out of the buggy momentarily to review the spices as they were at a higher level than cart sitting position. While studying the shelf I was all of a sudden run totally over by a 4 year old running loose on the store. Fortunately I was knocked into the shelf that caught my fall. I reached down to pick up my cane just as his mom rounded the corner yell at me for knocking down her son with a lot of language I will not share here.  During the woman’s tirade I felt my daughter hand close tightly over my hand that had a death grip on the cane. Still lost for words at the situation, I looked at my daughter and she said very calmly one word- “Breathe”. And I did as my brain wanted to hit this woman with the cane. As much as I try to always sign off with being kind, this was one of those times I thought…umm NO. My daughter knew my boiling point had been reached and she also knew I  was good at swinging a baseball bat and a cane would be easy-peasy. Sometimes it takes others to help us get back in focus, so I just stared at the woman as she and her out of control child cleared the end of the aisle.

The humor came about 15 minutes later and 3 aisles further down when a loud crash was heard throughout the store. As we neared the area guess who we saw? The little boy was in a buggy being watched by a store clerk while mom and store manager cleaned up multiple packages of  dried soup mixes scattered on the floor from a display that now lay destroyed on the end of an aisle.

As I rode by the scene, I made eye contact with the mom. I raised only one eyebrow and nodded as I scooted slowly by in my electric cart. Oh how I wish I had a horn to go beep beep as I passed by.

Sometimes when someone sprays you with lemon juice, your the one that gets the refreshing glass of lemonade.

Ahhh

Even though life slaps you in the face, try to remember to be kind, even when it is  not deserved. You may get blessed with a chuckle before it is all over.
